Welcome to Paradigm Schools

Are you ready to have a paradigm shift? At Paradigm Schools, our goal is to create a facility for our scholars to grow, not just teach students. We do this by teaching our scholars how to think, not just what to think, so they can be ready to participate in academia as thought leaders rather than followers.

Learning happens best when it is self-led, which is why our schools offer multiple modes of learning and a multidisciplinary approach to cater to each individual scholar. We want your scholar to learn in the best way for them, not anybody else.

Our History

Paradigm Schools was founded in 2006 by a group of families who homeschool their children. Our founders Val and Celia Johnson wanted to find a school that was founded on principles of freedom and on classical educational philosophies. We have always valued education more than schooling.

Paradigm was one of the first stand-alone charter high schools, that wasn’t on a college campus, in Utah that served grades 9-12. Our charter school started in a warehouse with 200 students, but we started to grow. In 2008, we opened our current location in South Jordan and grew our student count to over 500 scholars.

In 2013, the school became Paradigm Schools when it expanded to include the Paradigm Preparatory, serving grades 7-8.

Definition of “Paradigm”:

What Makes Paradigm Unique

Paradigm Schools is unique in that it has deliberately attempted to make a challenging education accessible to all students. We want our scholars to be able to follow in the footsteps of great scientists, artists, and thinkers as they gain the knowledge they need to make their mark as contributing members of society.

  • Curriculum of Original Works: Paradigm has created a strong curriculum of original works, primary source documents, and classic books (we don’t utilize textbooks).
  • Small Class Sizes: Class sizes of around 20 pupils allow for a more personalized learning experience for scholars and helps make sure no one slips through the cracks.
  • Individualized, Scholar-Led Learning: Everyone learns differently. That’s why we offer multiple modes of learning and encourage scholars to choose projects, models, and labs that work for them.
  • Mentoring: Plato had Socrates and our scholars have the help and mentoring of their teachers, often in a one-on-one setting. That’s why we refer to teachers at Paradigm Schools as mentors.
  • Our Personal Mission:Paradigm teaches every person has gifts to offer our community. Scholars are encouraged to seek out the ways they might each be of benefit to society and harness their knowledge, power, and talents.
  • Relevance-Based Learning:This style of learning engages the student in discussion and hands-on applications. It applies relevance to educational principles and makes learning come alive.
  • Strong Code of Conduct:Scholars, parents, and staff are expected to model a high standard of behavior. Paradigm’s fluid and flexible structure is best suited for disciplined scholars ready to proactively pursue their education.

We see ourselves as resources to parents. One of our foundational principles as a school is that parents are the primary educators for their children and that schools are to serve as a resource to families. It is our responsibility as parents to teach our children Math, Science, History, English, Art, Music, and other things. We work with families in partnership to provide the best learning and growing experience for our children we can.

Our commitment is to be the best resource to families we can be by working with families to provide high-quality educational experiences through our unique program for the scholars who attend our school.

  • I love Paradigm. My children have never been happier, and have found a love of learning that was missing in their previous education!

I went to Paradigm all through high school. Best experience ever. Not only did it help me focus on my strengths, but it also prepared me for college with its challenging curriculum that makes you think outside the box. The mentors there care about each of their students individually, and want nothing more than the students’ success.
