If your fifth grader seems ready for more challenges, real conversations, and mentors who know them by name, we’ve got some good news! 

Paradigm Schools is expanding to include 6th grade for the 2026–27 year. That means younger students who are eager to dive into classics, labs, and small-group learning will be able to join a community built around thinking, rather than just test scores.

Paradigm is a tuition-free public charter serving grades 7–12 now, and the school’s move to bring 6th grade into the program gives families a way to access a classical, mentor-driven experience earlier. The school’s mission centers on teaching scholars how to think using classic texts, Socratic discussion, and mentor guidance, an approach that can make the jump to middle school feel purposeful and engaging.

Why This Matters For A Rising 5th Grader

Many districts treat 6th grade as elementary; others have made it part of middle school. At Paradigm, we have found that many families are ready for their 11-12 year-old child to begin a more rigorous classical education. By 6th grade, students are ready to step into the art of dialogue — learning not just to speak, but to listen, question, and reason with others. Along with being introduced to the Socratic discussion method, there are leadership opportunities, engaging classroom simulations, and fun project work included with our 6th grade program!

Our 6th-Grade Experience

Imagine your child in a classroom where discussion happens daily, where mentors help them set learning goals, and where “project time” is treated as real work. Instead of filling worksheets, they might be reading a classic passage and then building a short project or presentation to show what they learned. The goal is to help students develop habits of thinking; clear writing, thoughtful conversation, and confident public speaking before they reach high school.

Around age 11 or 12, children begin to cross a remarkable threshold — they’re no longer satisfied with simply knowing what to think. They start wanting to know why. This natural curiosity makes sixth grade the perfect moment to introduce the Socratic method, where asking questions becomes the pathway to understanding.

1. Visit early. Join us for an Open House on Tuesday, November 11th at 6:00 pm. This Open House is specifically for future 6th, 7th and 8th graders!

2. Ask about the transition plan. Every school handles grade transitions differently, ask how Paradigm supports new 6th graders socially and academically.

Registration for the 2026–27 year opens October 15, 2025. Mark that date and plan a quick tour or info session before then so you can ask specific questions about curriculum and placement.
